Making of a Cooking Demonstration Video – Research

To research how to make a cooking demonstration I first looked into Buzz Feed and its Tasty videos which are seen all over social media.

The how tasty is made video’s are ok but, they get filmed in a studio. Realistically for what I want to do it gives ideas but practically not so much more.

I found a YouTube Channel called Chef Julie Yoon.

She cooks from her own kitchen and has people to help, but, she did one episode called ‘The 10 things we learned form season 1’

In this she talks about the things she has  learned, there were some good tips about being yourself and natural.

The link below is to the video

I also looked into the use of lighting and video angles.

The use of two cameras and tripods, and the lighting.

Evaluation for Cooking Demo Video

This was not my first choice for video, however the radio presenter I was going to film has been seriously ill for some time. A decision had to be made to ensure I had time film and edit the piece properly.

It took a while to decide what to do. I initially filmed a lot of footage in Scarborough but the wind was really bad and even with a tripod was still to shaky.

I had to do something where things like the weather would not be a factor.

I chose a cooking demonstration as I write a weight loss blog based on weight watchers and felt it could work for both.

I added the information shots stating Smart Points values for this reason.

The location was perfect as there were no outside elements to deal with, the main issue was the lighting as the main work space can be quite dark.

Two lamps easily provided what was needed.

The filming was done using a Canon 750D for the wide shots. This was on a tripod placed just behind me to the right.

The other shots were filmed on my Samsung Galaxy 7 phone.

For the prep section this was on a table top tripod, for the cooking closeups it was just held.

There were several initial attempts to get the angles right and to be able to move easily with the tripod legs taking half the floor space.

The shoot once set up was simple to film. The Canon camera was just left to continually film, whilst the phone was used as required.

I edited the film using Adobe Premier Pro and The sound track was edited in Adobe Audition.

The main aim with editing was to keep the demo as something that could be followed, but within the time allowed.

In cooking there is a saying about 5 P’s: Perfect Prep Prevents P**poor Performance, I took that thought into the editing of the demo.

The sequence was pre-determined, it was the timing and balance that took time.

To do this I increased the speed of some clips.

The hardest thing was the music, it took a week of looking to find a track that would work.

I used Audition which I have never done before and found it really difficult in the beginning, but the end result is ok.

Overall I feel happy with the result.

Work Experience Confirmation

Great news on the work experience front. After stressing about lack of confirmed work experience I have been offered 2 days at Scarborough News.

It’s a weekly publication that was one Scarborough Evening News.

As it’s my home town I know the patch really well.

The experience in a new room will be great

Dates are 19th and 20th Jan

Talk about Local Unconference

Birmingham City University Curzon Building was the venue for Talk about Local #TAL16.

The unconference was aimed at anyone involved with or who has an interest in Hyperlocal news.

There was no structure to the conference. At the start the group gathered in the main room. The floor was opened to people to come forward and make a suggestion for a topic they would like to discuss. If others show interest, a slot is designated.

Once all topics had been decided a time and room was designated.

I picked 3 groups to join.

The first was on Facebook news, whilst i thought the subject would be interesting as it turned out it was a man speaking about his PHD on the subject and his findings.

The second was to do with court reporting. This was really interesting discussion.

The group was only small and all aspects of court reporting was covered, including the possible developments in the future.

The third was the most interesting. It was on how virtual reality and 360 degree vids will change the face of journalism.

We spoke about the way in which when using 360 cameras the crew, instead of being behind the camera will be part of the story.

It was also discussed about the way in which people can receive news, examples of google glass was given.

News Story Ideas

My initial idea was Holiday Travel as i’m going away on the 19th and there is always chaos.

Between holdups on the motorways, the trains and the airlines there are usually holdups and delays.

I was thinking about using the angle of  ‘is it the …. at fault or as this happens regularly should the people travelling  allow extra time for their journey’

There is another contender, ‘the like between childhood obesity and depravity’
