Writing For Purpose – Event

My original event was to be the Hull Animal Welfare Christmas Fair. They are a great cause do really important work. On the night of the event I got a couple of interviews and pictures, however I was asked to go back the following day to speak to the manager.

When I arrived I was told to call after Christmas  and speak to the chair of the committee.

I let messages and she called back after New Year but only after I found an alternative. I will still do a piece on them for Hyperfruit.

The chosen event for the piece was the New Years Day launch of UK City of Culture.

There were so many things happening throughout the city. I went to most of them but focused on three.

It was so nice to be able to write about the positive things going on within Hull rather than the things which go wrong.

This would be a regional or local article, however it could be used for the national.

Writing For Purpose – Print-News Story

For my new story I initially struggled both with finding a story and how to write it.

I had a couple of options and one I am still hoping to cover as it is an ongoing issue.

After speaking to Carmen it was suggested I call in at Trinity Market and speak to some of the stall holders/

Within no time I had a positive story form one of the stall holders, there was another however not so convinced, this gave a sense of balance.

The market has really taken a hit over past years and the delay in the referb has taken its tole on stall holders and shoppers. It is refreshing to be able to report something positive.

The story is written for a local paper.

The outcome is something I am happy with.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Entertains At Hull City Hall

The Royal Philharmonic orchestra featuring violin soloist Leticia Moreno amazed the audience at Hull City Hall,

Hull City Hall welcomed the world renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra featuring solo violinist Leticia Moreno as part of their 70th Anniversary celebrations.

The programme consisted of 3 pieces, each in contrast to the one before, each breath taking.

The first Weber’s Der Freischutz Overture. The whole piece was stunning however the clarinet solo was almost haunting, together with the rich tones of the double bass, and the warmth of the brass, blended to create something almost hypnotic.

The second piece, Mandelssohn’s violin concerto featured Leticia Moreno, a thirty one year old Spanish violinist. Soloists have a special talent, they draw all eyes to them holding their attention.

Mrs Raymond told me of Miss Moreno “I’ve seen her before, it’s like the violin is part of her. She is as much part of it as it is of her.”

Throughout the intense piece Miss Moreno was magnificent, her whole body seemed consumed by the music.

During the interval Mrs Mead and her 11 year old daughter told how they had travelled for Bridlington to see the orchestra play. Miss Mead was excited as she has just started taking Cello lessons. Mrs Mead had seen the Royal Philharmonic before and wanted her daughter to experience ‘the feel of the music’ explaining she believes music is ‘more than just a collection of notes, but something almost tangible’.

The second half Brahms Symphony No.4 was performed. Throughout this piece was a beautiful picking, the sound emanated when room with almost hypnotic effect.

One of the stars of the evening has been without question the conductor Eduardo Portal. He was a very expressive conductor. His command over the orchestra and clear passion for the music was clear to see, his interactions with the musicians and their responses. It is clear that the conductor is the lynch pin that ensures everything runs without issue.

Writing an Introduction

This week we started the process of writing news. We started with the intro paragraph. What does it include, the length and sentence structure.

This i found really interesting, the amount of information that needs to be contained in such a small word count.

The Who, When, Where, Why and What and How. The intention is that readers can gain the key point to the story at a glance. This gives them  the option on weather to carry on reading or move on to the next story.

The news then works in a pyramid style with the most important information earlier in the piece.

What is News?

Today we spoke about what news actually is.

We were given the quote ” When a dog bites a man. that’s not news, because it happens so often. But if a man bits a dog, that’s news”

Quote from John A Bogart in F.M. O’Brien’s book Story of the (New York) Sun (1918) Chapter 10

News is something that’s happening know and relevant.

The most impact full news include people, real people, real lives and real events. They may be controversial, dramatic, even bizarre but real.

Innovation, medical and scientific breakthroughs, financial and political these are all relevant.
